A little change of events.

I just called them (Capitol City Nissan's service department) to check on the status. He told me that they are not sure what is going on and will have Nissan corporate in next week to check it out.

I asked again if I can forward information about the North Carolina GT-R (MC) and the Istanbul, Turkey GT-R. He said yes.

I sent him the information about the part.

I will stop by tomorrow to talk to their tech in person.

That sucks Terry. My impression with Capital City Nissan was always not so great when I had my Nissan. I am surprised that they can't diagnosis the problem even with a trained tech...

Just got the GT-R back.

Capitol City Nissan replaced the 48700-JF00B (LOCK STEERING) part along with two non-reusable bolts that secure the airbag.

So, I think they did remove the airbag.

Now it's my turn to have this problem. Supposed to go out tonight for a holiday party it won't recognize the key at all. Acts like it isn't in the car. I've tried all of the things that others tried on different forums, to no avail. We'll see if Capital City can do better this time Terry.

Oh man, that seems like a very common problem for GT-R now. Maybe Nissan need to release a TSB for it. Good luck getting it fixed, hopefully Capital City Nissan will do a better job this time!

I'll let you know how they do. Now that they have seen it once, maybe they will handle it better.

Turns out that it is exactly the same thing that happened to Terry's (totsubo) car. Part should be here tomorrow and I'll likely have my car back after work. The tow guy was awesome. He knew exactly what to do so that the car didn't get scraped because of the low clearance. He was a real pro.

Add another victim.

Yesterday - 2:30pm - yellow key light is "on" when I return to car from neighborhood post office. Steering column locked in "off" position. Car will NOT recognize key (nothing illuminates on dash).

Contacted dealership; they send flatbed for car. Offer to send car for me if I don't want to wait on flatbed. I decline. While waiting I put transmission in NEUTRAL via the little hole on the passenger side of the gear shift.

Flatbed and I arrive at dealership at 4:30pm. Car remained at dealership overnight. I was given a new 370Z for my loaner car.

Today - 3:30pm - receive phone call from dealership; GTR is ready for pick-up.

Parts installed: 47700-JF00B (Lock Steering) and 47703-06F0A (2 bolts) price = USD900+

So, this common problem was resolved in 25 hours. ALL costs and loaner car were under warranty.

INFO:

Car had 16,225 miles on odometer.

Vin # is 1335; 2009 model

Car was ordered early April, 2008

Car was manufactured July, 2008

Car was delivered September, 2008

iConcur. The dealer I go to could learn a few things from that. Both times I've been in they have given me the shittiest loaners (rentals) that you can imagine. My service has been great, but it just doesn't seem right the kind of cars they put me in...

As of last week it seems that Nissan North America began reaching out to those US customers with these vehicles to get them in for a pro-active replacement. The official wording of the TSB outline is:

CP 2009 GT-R; Steering Lock Unit – Voluntary Service Campaign

Quote:
Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Service Campaign to replace the steering lock assembly on certain specific 2009 model year GT-R vehicles due to excessive oil within the assembly, which could cause the Body Control Module (BCM) to prevent the engine from starting when the ignition is cycled. This issue does not affect steering or engine operation when the vehicle is already running. See this bulletin for further detail.
So guys, if you’re an owner and you get this letter, get in to your dealer so you don’t get stuck somewhere. If you’re a second owner, see your local dealer to find out if you’re affected in case you don’t receive the letter yourself.

That this only effects early 2009 model cars leads me to believe Japan and NA may be the only regions effected. Nissan Australia didn’t respond to our inquiries to confirm this however.

I haven't yet gotten the official letter from Nissan; but I called my Svc Mgr yesterday. He ordered the part I need and will then schedule the service.
