Default Programming Devices

I'm hoping to get an early 2012 GTR. Maybe yes, maybe no...according to availability (I have my order in).

However, even though this is jumping the gun, is it generally the opinion of "modifiers" here that buying a Cobb or other programming device is the first cost-effective "mod' to make, even without any other modifications?

Related questions: Does the Cobb device "dedicate itself" to the first CPU it sees; i.e., can I buy a used one, or would I be "locked out?" And, is firmware/software available for it for 2012?

As far as I am aware of, COBB AccessPort does not dedicate itself to the first ECU it sees. I do not think anything is available for 2012 yet, as nobody has got their hands on one to look into the new software.
